Student Art Show—Coming Soon

It’s almost here! Put it on your calendar now. Spread the word. Tucker County students will be featured in the:

  • STArt 2011 Student Art Show
  • Sunday, May 1, 2:30
  • Davis Community Center
  • Over 100 art works by Tucker county school students
  • Cash prizes and ribbons
  • Art will be for sale to benefit the students’ schools
  • Prize-winning art will be exhibited around town until Memorial Day

Sabrina Leary’s tempera painting “Expressing Colors” took Best of Show in 2010.

Not only will selected art of students in all levels of the Tucker County Schools be on display, but also the entire community will have the opportunity to lend their support to the School-Town Art (STArt) Project. STArt rewards students for their artistic accomplishments, provides supplementary funding for art instruction in the schools, and builds for the future of arts education in Tucker County.

STArt Treasurer John Ferguson awards checks in 2009 to participating students (here L to R: Chad Ruggles, Ryan Poling, John Ferguson, and Alix Lily). A check for $800 was also presented to the Tucker County High School art department.

Ticket sales to the STArt 2010 Student Art Show last year were supplemented by over 50 corporate and individual donors who made significant contributions to STArt. Contributions from both 2009 and 2010 have made STArt 2011 possible. We hope the community will again help us to make the show a great success for this year’s students and to pave the way for next year.

STArt 2009, “More Than a Bowl,” brought the public to view the ceramic accomplishments of eight students.

STArt has over 25 Community Advisors working hard to organize this year’s program and to shape future efforts. They need your help, too. How? Put May 1 on the calendar. Talk it up with friends. Get your tickets when they become available. Take STArt to the next level. The possibilities are endless.

A follower of Create Tucker recently challenged us to look beyond our community for inspiration. We find these suggestions to be exciting for both funding possibilities and for examples for how another West Virginia community values the arts for young people.

What do you think? Can you help us put resources and ideas like these to work for our next steps? Let’s work together to find ways to support the Tucker County potential represented by the images in this blog post. We end with two more.

A 2010 Merit Award went to Cristal Jackson for her tempera painting “Vines” . . .

. . . and to Liesa Kimelaskas for her “Mask Interpretation.”
